Do You Know How Viagra Was Discovered?

I wonder how many people actually know how Viagra was discovered? The concept began in 1985 and it was for a totally different condition having to do with the heart.

It would not be surprising to find out that Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company is responsible for the world's first and leading erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra. However, you might be a bit more surprised to discover that it was kind of invented on accident. Yes, it's true! Scientists who work for Pfizer were working on a drug that would treat angina and during the studies found out that it was working for erectile dysfunction. The rest is history and it wasn't too long after that when the Food and Drug Administration approved it for the use of correcting erectile dysfunction in men.

The actual concept began in 1985 to use specific ingredients to help angina, which is a disorder of the heart. In 1986 the work began through 1990 during which time molecule after molecule was tested in the laboratory. Out of the hundreds that were tested one offered the most hope, it was UK-92,480, the properties in it showed hope for those who suffer from angina. The medicine was later called Sildenafil.

“Double-blind, placebo controlled” clinical trials started in 1993 to test how well Viagra treated patients with erectile dysfunction. To make the trials a fair test, neither the patients, nor their doctors, knew if they were receiving the medicine or an inactive placebo. Viagra proved to be a huge success (Pfizer).

The next step was licensing which has to be conducted on all medicines by medical authorities before any medication can be prescribed. It is a procedure that will satisfy the FDA that the drug is safe and effective. This process usually takes about a year but Pfizer got lucky and got licensed in about six months. It was done; Viagra was introduced as the little blue pill that could cure erectile dysfunction in 1998. Within the first three months 2.9 million prescriptions were written for Viagra (Pfizer). That's how it all started and here we are now.

So Pfizer deserves a standing ovation for once again coming up with a life enhancing drug. If 2.9 million prescriptions were filled within the first three months, it makes one wonder how many men are suffering from erectile dysfunction across the globe. Great job Pfizer!!! This also makes not only doctors but patients alike feel so much more at ease prescribing and also ingesting Viagra because Pfizer is a well known name that people trust. Pfizer has represented quality and consistency to people for years and years and they were right on mark with Viagra too.
